How I did it: Just before moving to Boston I was living in Carmel, CA, RIGHT BY MONTEREY! I got a membership to the aquarium, so I was going like 5 times a week (memberships are so the way to go: no pressure to stay all day to see tons of stuff, no planning necessary... I'd pop in for 20 min just before close or 45 min just after lunch). If you're there at the right time they'll sometimes let you briefly hold the starfish in the back of the kids area downstairs where the ray display is. You can always touch them! But I feel guilty doing it, so I don't often.
That aquarium is AMAZING. AND you can sign up for text alerts so they tell you when interesting stuff is going to happen! Octopus feedings, albatross meetings, all manner of fun!
