Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

joie de vivreFinished!

I still haven’t done the Goodwill run, but everything is now completely tidied up and thoroughly vacuumed.

Today David returns from Cleveland, and I regret to say that I have been bracing myself for his criticism. That the work should have been done months ago. That some (minor) aspect of the job wasn’t done to his spec or liking.

In fact, I’ve already shed tears over this anticipated criticism, which really isn’t fair to him. Still bracing myself anyway, because it’ll ease the pain when if he launches in. 2 years ago

joie de vivreNearly done but

It’s just about 6:00 now and we’re both really hungry. There’s still some final work in the basement that needs to be done, but it really needs to be done by Emma, not by me.

Then, tomorrow, I will be loading up the car for the trip to the Goodwill. Also, if I was really a good girl, to the dump, if I can find one open on a Sunday. Get rid of the broken chair, broken mattress, and other crap.

So now, I think it’s showers for us both, and food, and we actually have some shopping we need to do, too. 2 years ago

joie de vivre4:44 PM

After I had lunch, I promptly fell asleep on the sofa and slept until nearly 3:30.

I am aware of how the basement room is, to some extent, a room of failures and incompletely realized dreams. A half-finished craft project in a bag. My husband’s papers from the job he lost. Piles upon piles upon piles of unsorted photos from years past. A broken dress form.

There’s also all my daughter’s sewing things. Four or five old ladies dumped their old sewing notions on my daughter. Hem tape. Thread. Buttons. Little envelopes labeled 19 cents and 39 cents with needles inside. 2 years ago

joie de vivreAlmost 1:00

I am pretty tired. I am going to rest, then have lunch. Realistic return time: 2:00.

Goodwill run in our future. Also, really, if I were smart, a run to the tech recycle center in Issaquah on the way to work on Monday. 2 years ago
