Number 1 down: I went, I saw 3 years ago

I was in awe…

The place was CRAMMED with students (mostly journalism students) but it was just so cool to be in a place with an official row reserved for “the press” – and some famous guy from the BBC was there (not being a hobnobber or having a TV I wouldn’t know – must work on the name dropping!)

The speaker was Yosri Fouda.
I’m not going to report back, mainly because I’m tired, also because I probably don’t have the grace to do it without offending someone. There was a pretty hot discussion, a lot of jokes too though.

It was weird at the end to file out with all the students and think, ho hum, work again tomorrow…! I can’t process the mixture of nostalgia and wondering why I didn’t do this when I was a student, and coolness of having a job and a life outside of the university precinct (which weirdly was just like a university, even right there in the middle of London, it’s like you turn a corner into Disneyland).

It was a wickedawesome feeling, a great situation and I learned a lot. I like pretending that I am a student. (I suppose I was one just by virtue of being there, in the wider sense of the word).

First one tonight?? 3 years ago

Aljazeera – A Different Voice in the World?

This was the first on my list of “want to go tos”. I’m seriously toying with the idea of trying it out tonight, even though the weather’s evil. I have some shopping to do on the way which makes the whole thing a bit happier!

Also it helps that the uni is perfectly situated between a stop that is on the line from work, and two more that are on the line to Victoria… it’s almost too easy…

Programme 3 years ago

Right, I’ve made a shortlist of about one a week that I would really like to get to and look really interesting (and put the rest in my diary just in case I am at a loose end one evening!)

The UN ones start the week after next so I’m going to try and get to one or two next week, just to find my way around (I figure the UN ones might be packed) and to see whether I like the atmosphere and can stay awake.

YAY!

ooooooh!! 3 years ago

OK I am about to enter the first nail into my coffin of geekiness but…

Just the past couple of days I realised that I am so not into going out and getting drunk out of my skull any more. It’s not that I haven’t enjoyed it in the past or even that I think it’s a waste of time particularly, it’s just not on my radar at the moment as a way of spending time (and money, primarily).

But I do still want to get out, and socialise; I just want to do it in a way that enhances my interests and lets me spend serious time with people who have similar interests. So I struck on the idea of checking out societies, lectures, that kind of thing.

And lo and behold… the LSE is just about to start a series of free lectures on the state (and, presumably, future) of the UN, which is like the thing I am most interested in at the moment. So I am going to try and go to as many of them as possible and really learn something, get up-to-date perspectives on UN reform. The list of speakers looks amazing.

They have a whole mass of other lectures on as well – something basically every night it seems.

I AM SO EXCITED!!!
