Next month I’m being sworn in as a CASA volunteer, which stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA volunteers are responsible for advocating on behalf of a child (or children) who are in foster care. Their job is especially important, because while social workers are assigned dozens or scores of cases, CASAs only have one child (or sibling group) at a time. If you’re interested in helping children in the foster system in your area, please go to www.nationalcasa.org to see if your area has a CASA program.
How to volunteer at least twice a month
How I did it: I went to the National CASA site and found our local CASA organization, and signed up with them for training. They have their own training schedule, or you can do independent training (I opted for the in-house training). It took me so long to complete this goal because I had to wait until I was in a comfortable position to take a case, which didn't happen until several months after I was sworn in.
Lessons & tips: They will contact you after you fill out the request info form, and let you know what their training schedule is.

There is a woman’s shelter that has been advertising around campus for volunteers, and when I get back to college next week I’m going to call them and see if they need help on the weekends.
I went in to talk with the ACS people, and the lady who runs the volunteer program said she would call JAG to see if they need volunteers (because that’s what I would prefer) but if they say no, then I’ll probably volunteer with USO.
I’m going to ACS (Army Community Services) to talk with the people in charge of volunteer stuff on base. On the form I filled out offering to volunteer I said I was available for 5-10 hours a week, but really I’m open to whatever they need.
Tuesday’s I tutor in an elementary school and I volunteer for Political Action Committees (PAC).
Its a great way to spend time.
At LibraryThing someone started a forum about an organization called BookShare.org. They make books available to people who can’t/have difficulty reading, and need volunteers to either scan in books or help with processing the books already scanned in. It’d be a great way for me to volunteer without having to worry about travel and such.
well, I can’t volunteer my time right now, but I can volunteer my money, and tell people about the charities I support. I gave $15 to Spirit of America for their “Clothes for Iraqis and Afghanistanis” fund-raising.
Des is slowly regaining her sanity (unfortunately?)
...at least twice a day, on most days.
This will have to wait until next month. The semester is almost over, I’m sure there are plenty of places looking for volunteers over Christmas.
