How to read a manga in Japanese

"I read a volume of manga completely in Japanese for the first time. I have been studying for a long time, and it felt so great that it actually paid off."
How I did it: I know a lot of people start learning Japanese because they want to be able to read manga in the original. I started learning Japanese because I love Japanese music, and fell in love with Japan. I studied for a long time, and I was really motivated because I did things that I liked in the language instead of sitting down and copying things like most people learning languages do. I listened to music and watched TV shows in Japanese. Then I went to Japan as an exchange student for a few months. It really boosted my learning skills, but I wasn't good enough yet. Then I came home and worked even harder and learned more. I finally got out one of the manga I bought in Japan, and I had to look a few things up now and then, but I read it!!
Lessons & tips: Do things in Japanese that you like to do in English. Watch movies, shows, listen to music. You also need to have studied specialized words according to the manga you want to read. For example, some manga talk about business and you would need to know words like boss, income, job...etc.
Resources: Books are the best way to learn concepts. Find books that work for your style of learning, because it's different for every person.

Reading a page or two every now and then, I finally finished the 11th volume of Yami no Matsuei. I have to admit there was quite a lot of things I didn’t understand, but then again, when reading a text in a foreign language, there will probably always be some words you don’t recognize. What is really important is to get the idea of what is happening and why, to see the bigger picture to to speak.
All that high and mighty talk aside, I really loved Watari’s dialect.
So, I consider this goal achieved. Next, I’ll try and read a real novel with no sinfully hot Shinigami men to help me gain some motivation.

This is something I could achieve quite soon if I put some real effort into studying. Sure, I get the most important points already, but what I want is to read a whole volume without relying on a dictionary. Most of the English translations I’ve come across are really good, but I can’t help thinking something gets lost in the process of translating.
Me and my noble goals, really.

impossible to read everything in their original languages as we only have the capacity to do so much in a lifetime but i really feel like the meaning is lost in translated comics. i browsed my favorite ranma 1/2 in a store years ago when the translated versions first appeared and put it down in horror—not funny at all in english.
