Planning to go see Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog, playing at the Musicbox Theater in chicago. It’s about “the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the astral summer.”

I was down in Ushuaia earlier this year (the Southern tip of South America where most ships to Antartica leave from) and did look at going. Unfortunately I get very sea sick and thought better of it. There are flights from Chile (Punta Arenas) but they are only there for a day and cost about 2100 US Dollers.
Will have to sort out my sea sickness or run into some money!

Just got into Cape Town, South Africa, after a 50 day trip that took me to the Antarctic peninsula and South Georgia. It is truly beautiful down there and the wildlife is amazing—I never dreamed there were so many varieties of seals, whales, and penguins and that one could come into such close contact with them. The history of whaling and sealing in the region is quite apparent but the animals seem to be recovering and it is good to see governments and tourist organizations doing so much to protect them going forward. I highly recommend anyone to visit the Antarctic should they ever have the chance.

I am in Ushuaia (southernmost city in Argentina) now and will join the Europa this afternoon. By tomorrow afternoon we will be heading out of the Beagle Channel and towards the Drake Passage. Now sure how long the passage to the Antarctic peninsula will take, but it shouldn’t be more than a few days before I set foot in Antarctica!

This is one of the best ways to get there. However, it is expencive and you have to sign up years in advance…
But hopefully one day I will do it.

I’ve signed aboard a tall ship traveling to Antarctica, paid my deposit, announced my resignation, and now I wait. And I should probably start shopping for warm clothes.

I like the cold. Read my entry about the Ice Hotel for context. Besides, icebergs are cool.
