I went to Georgia with Habitat last spring break. It was the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done!
People doing this are also doing these things:

JP Creighton rising to shine on a rainy cloudy May Sunday;waiting for coffee, here.
May G-d grant we found one along the Northwest Highway some where between Harvard and Palatine.
I have wanted to do this forever and i thought is was going to have to wait until college. But i found out recently that a guy is starting a chapter in my school. I really hope it all works out. I can’t wait.
I’ve done it twice… it was a great feeling… and it also let me know that I have no future in construction.

...and yet I found things to do to be helpful at the jobsite. And even learned a few things. Got a heck of a sunburn, too. Met the family who would in time live in the house.
It was all good!

I’ve just learned that a close friend is planning a habitat weekend in honor of her husband who just recently passed away. This will be a great opportunity to work towardthis goal, this cause and honorthe memory of Paul. I’m really looking forward to that.

It’s fun, a great way to meet similarly-minded people, and it helps out those who need it the most with something they can really use.
I’ve worked on parts of houses and single-day things here and there, but the very best time was when I participated in a six-day “Blitz Build” where we went from poured foundation to occupied dwelling in seven days (skipping Sunday). That was an incredible rush.
I had a great time, I met great new people, I helped out in the community and I learned to put a roof on a house!!!
Get a bunch of people you like together for this project. It’s a long day but can be loads of fun (we didn’t build a whole house, just did different projects for one day). You really feel like you racked up the karma points after you do it:)

I got this idea from Sld1. I don’t bring any skills, but I’d like to help. I mean I can hammer and screw (hehe) but I don’t know anything about plumbing or carpentry or electicity. Maybe I can learn something so I can fix my own house too.
