make others feel important

My friend’s younger brother just moved to Windsor from Vancouver. He decided to get a job here because he was not enjoying his time in Vancouver. Why? I don’t know because I love Vancouver…...so much fun. He said he found it hard to make new friends and people were not very friendly. I guess it’s hard to adjust in a new place especially if you don’t know anyone.
He doesn’t know anyone here, so I was asked to show him around. I really wanted him to feel welcome. His drive from Vancouver was horrible. Went through to snow storms. Car broke down twice. Car was broken into. They stole is laptop and cell phone.
He’s been in Windsor now a little over a week. I’ve taken him out for beer and chicken wings. Taken him to my work Christmas social. Taken his clothes to the dry cleaners. Bought him some beer. Bought him some food because he has no money until he gets paid.
I think I did a really good job of making him feel important! :)

Last week I sent my friend a text message on his phone wishing him a happy birthday. No big deal right? Took me less then a minute to do it.
This weekend he called me to see if I wanted to go for a drink. We went to a local bar down the street and talked about what we’ve been up to the last couple of months.
It started to get late and we decided to call it a night. I told him I would drop him off at home so he wouldn’t have to drive. On our way to his house he asked if I remembered when I sent him that text message a week ago.
“Of course I did. It was your birthday”, I said.
He told me that day was the most depressing day ever. No one called him that day to wish him a happy birthday. None of his friends or family remembered. His girlfriend was at work and he was sitting at home all by himself. To top it all off, his girlfriend’s mom came over and took their cable box. So he couldn’t even watch tv.
He told me I was the only one that remembered his birthday and he really appreciated the text message.
