larp!

I’ve been larping for about 8 months now. I’ve done larpschool and 3 events. It’s fun and I love it so much. If anyone wants to know anything. I’m in the Netherlands.

Just got back from four hours of playing with an Amtgard group. Darn fun and very nice people.

I managed to kill a few people myself but, yeah, mostly died. My previous fencing and kendo experience is only marginally useful, as this is just very mock combat with foam weapons. I will say it is much faster, sportier, and cooler then I imagined. I highly recommend Amtgard for those that may like a little more action and a little less role play to their LARP.

If the only thing stopping you from doing this is what other people might think you are going to miss out. I’d bet over half the people that may make fun or laugh at LARPers really want to play. Just some food for thought.

Not exactly like the backyard LARPing I used to do when I was 7-10.

Joined http://www.meetup.com/ in hopes that something will shake out sometime. Local LARP group is going to suspend things for a bit as school kicks off here in a few. Booo.

(This goal = +10 to nerdiness … and you just have to embrace that.)

LARPing used to be my nerd limit. The one thing that I wouldn’t do so that I could say “Well, I might pretend to be a Star Wars character on Facebook, and I might be able to pontificate on basically any sort of obscure Elder Scrolls minutia that could be imagined and I may write Johnny Storm/Peter Parker slash (that I never finish, but whatever) but at least I don’t LARP!”

Then a friend of mine invited me to an old World of Darkness Werewolf LARP that she was involved in, and I thought “Meh, everything’s worth trying once.”

Yeah. Then I got into it pretty bad. Because it’s awesome and truckloads of fun. Everyone’s awesome for the most part and it’s not EXCEPTIONALLY dorky and over all it’s a great time.

Now I’ll just have to say “Well, at least I’m not addicted to WORLD OF WARCRAFT OH SNAP!!!” for all that. Because at least I get out of the house.

I just picked up Amtgard (which, admittedly, is light on the actual rp and heavy on the butt-kicking), and I LOVE it!! There’s nothing more fun than acting, especially when it’s off-stage.

Wow, I just typed the word larp and expected to find nothing because it is pretty unknown (here in the Netherlands it’s REALLY unknown). I had like 10 events so I pretty know the basics of LARP. And of course I love LARP. I hope to get to an event soon. My first will be….uhhmm…well…think Aran. That’s a tiny organisation but I will be GM in it. Weey! I’m going to screw it up I think, because it’s my first time as a GM. People larping! Yay! Hope to hear sum’things of you guys. If you ever come to the Netherlands, go and have a larp, they are really fun. And if they don’t speak English, they’ll just have to adjust!

If you live in Melbourne, the two main LARP groups, Philosophers Guild and B.I.F Larp, run twice to three times a year. I have been going for the past four. This is who I AM! Anyone in London know where I can Larp while overseas in April – End of August
