How to learn a new language by shivan

"tough, but so rewarding. I will be able to use this skill for the rest of my life."

How I did it: I attended Copenhagen Business School where I  studied at the Asian studies programme. I had a only year intensive course in chinese, followed by another year part time.
I studied a lot of the first year, i focus on building my vocabulary since it is to damn important the ability of converse. I had a language partner whom I met with once in a while. Just an hour a week or every other weeks really helps a lot. I went to China the first summer after my first year where I stayed with a chinese family and attended language school. I went to China the year after that after that as well, but i just travel a bit around and talked to chinese people.

Lessons & tips: Build your vocabulary, have a language partner, go to china, drink 1-2 beers and go out and talk to people. Use a pinyin table to make sure you can pronounce all the strange chinese sounds.

Resources: I recommend using the Oxford beginner's dictionary. I had a very nice layout and contains only the vocabulary you are like to use in the beginning of your studies.

    I picked up a program for my Nintendo DS called “Japanese Coach” and am using it to review some of the stuff I already know. I am impressed with what I’ve amassed to this point but realize that there is still a long way to go. Still, I’m enjoying the learning exercises and games and am using them to amuse me and to motivate me to continue sharpening my skills.

    To be honest, I’ve cheated on this goal. I’ve already been studying Japanese and Spanish on and off for the last ten years. But my learning has been very slow and stunted. Perhaps this entry of clarification will help: I want to be fluent in the languages that I have already started to learn.
