Wisdom Teeth: Introduction. 2 weeks ago

I figured that since one side of my gums is hurting a bit right now, it would be an ideal time to write my first entry about this. I’ve been putting off getting my wisdom teeth removed for far too long, and it’s really catching up with me. I was secretly hoping on the inside that I wouldn’t grow them, so I ignored their existence for as long as possible. That is, until one of them broke through a couple of years ago and I was in excruciating pain for weeks on end.

Apparently that wasn’t enough to make me get them checked out then, so here I am now; 26 years old and still with all 4 wisdom teeth. When I was younger, dentists freaked me out a lot, so I avoided them like the black plague. The thought of them cutting and pulling inside my mouth wasn’t exactly appealing, so I never let the topic of wisdom teeth come up. It took me a long time to muster the courage to get them looked at, but I did it. Before I left to come up north, I had all of my teeth looked at and fixed (after a few years of avoiding the dentist), and got a consultation from a specialist about the status of my wisdom teeth.

When I saw the x-ray of my wisdom teeth, it really hit home about how badly I need to deal with them. One of them is straight and exposed, where the others are quite far down and all facing nearly sideways. It scares me quite a bit, but I’ve taken the first step at least. I was going to get them removed just before I came up, but they urged me not to, as my healing time was going to be a little longer than what I had assumed. Apparently it will take me nearly a week to heal, given how close they are to my sinuses.

When I move back down and get back on my dental plan at my office I’m supposed to get them removed. Hopefully I won’t put it off too long, because I don’t want to know what it feels like if those sideways teeth decide to move. All I have to do is call and make the appointment.

Not always painful. 1 month ago

I was put to sleep for the operation and, best of all, felt nothing. Never even touched the drugs prescribed for the pain. The ONLY aftereffect for me was a numb tongue and lower lip that lasted only until the next day. Well that, and I was constantly napping and craved salty/greasy fast-food for the next few days.

Insurance, excuses 3 months ago

I have been having trouble getting my insurance to pay for my wisdom teeth removal, but I think that my failed attempt to get this done a few months ago deterred me from trying again. Even AFTER my 6 month dental clean up passed me by. But now I’m starting to feel them in my mouth, sometimes throbbing. Maybe this week I’ll finally make some more calls?

Glad I got this done 4 months ago

One of them was already starting to get lots of cavities, from being hard to reach with the toothbrush. And it was way cheaper here than it would have been in the states. The initial exam, and then the 4 extractions were a total of $145 US. It would have been ten times that much back home.

My mouth hurts, but it´ll get over it.

2 down, 2 to go! 5 months ago

Well, I had the ones on the right side removed this morning. My face is still numb, in fact. It wasn´t so bad, just a normal extraction. The dentist let me keep them, they´re still intact. When I get all four I may make a necklace from them, or something

I`ve got an appointment 5 months ago

for Friday, with a Nicaraguan dentist a friend referred me to. Nice guy. I`ll update as soon as this is done.

made the consultation, now waiting for a time to do it. 5 months ago

I’ve put it off for years, but now I’ve got the insurance and my jaw keeps hurting. On the upside I found an AWESOME oral surgeon. At my consult we spent more time talking about books and moving than about my teeth. (This was my second consult, so it wasn’t nerve-racking.)Now I just have to fill my prescriptions, and actually schedule the surgery for a time my husband can be there. Not too nervous since I’ve got a high pain threshhold. Just had surgery on something else and did the whole recovery with just Tylenol. Ha!

I’m about a month out of surgery and it was, by far, the worst experience of my life. Not trying to intimidate or scare anyone, this was just my experience.

Fortunately, I don’t remember anything from the surgery itself, just crying and being REALLY upset before and after. The pain meds I was given took 30 minutes to kick in, then wore off after 1 1/2 hours… leaving me in devastating pain until I could take another Darvocet. To top it off, I got a dry socket which required packing twice.

My jaw still hurts and I feel like I have a hole in my head, just now beginning to eat crunchy foods.
