How I did it: I stayed on a mates sofa for about 4 months saving up enough from working in various crappy jobs to be able to rent my own place. It's much more expensive than I thought it would be! Getting a deposit is a pain in the arse here ; they normally want 2 months up front, which is about a grand for a box room anywhere remotely central. Worth it in the end though as there's so much more happening here than anywhere else in the UK! Read how I did it…
How I did it: Worked out my arrival date. Estimated general cost of living for 2 months. Counted the number of pay periods between that date and my arrival date, and calculated how much I needed to save per pay period in order to have saved enough money.Saved, bought tickets, applied for visa, sold all my stuff, was granted visa, and moved! How I did it: I lived at home for a few months after college and saved up enough money for a deposit, then a friend and I moved down to London together. We used Moove2London's area listings to give us an idea of where we wanted/could afford to live. We had friends living in London at the time, so would come and stay with them for the weekend, whilst we were looking around potential flats. Eventually we found a place and then registered with temping age… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I moved in with some friends, who luckily had a spare bed. I found a job really quickly, made lots of new friends and met the man who's now my fiance. My parents still live near Nottingham, so in theory I could have gone back there if I'd needed or wanted to, but I've never once wanted to go back. London's kind of busy, but better busy than boring, hey? Read how I did it…
How I did it: A lot of planning, researching and saving money. I also bought an awesome e-book called The London Survival Guide. It has loads of tips and advice and the guys who wrote it share a lot of the mistakes they made so that you won't. Read how I did it…

My goal may be completed yet!
I have an interview for a job tomorrow. I’m a bit nervous – the idea of taking that big step and moving there is fairly scary…
But I guess I will just have to wait and see how the interview goes first :D

Have declined Belfast due to an unforeseen change of circumstances and am reapplying to Universities in London.
I should be moving there next year! :-) 2010 might be the lucky time.
I really want to move to London and the greatest thing about it is, when I’m eighteen and I’ve finally graduated I’ll have the chance to move there and live with my best friend Alec. I’m really, really looking forward to it and he’s as excited as I am.
It’s still a little foggy on how it’s going to happen though….
Hotdogger is wishing he wasn't at work
Here I am, 108 days away from flying over with my 2 dogs to meet my partner who’s been in London for a month already. I stayed behind due to the dogs and their quarantine of 6 months. We sorta saw it coming, jobs were going away at his work so he contacted the competition and got hired. Now I’m left behind to tend to all kinds of fun things like getting the house ready for renting, we can’t sell it in this economy and make any profit.
My biggest issue is trying to sell off the items I can’t bring over, mostly the TV’s, we have those larger Sony Wega CRT type TVs that have fallen out of fashion. I’m hoping to get $100 for either. Then we have this large solid oak Media Cabinet we paid a bundle for and it’ll have to be sold also. I have a complete 5 piece queen size bedroom set to put on the market too. How does anyone do it? Craigslist is cool but really hard when you have potential scams to deal with. We’re going from 1800 sq ft to maybe 900 sq ft. Our large American Size furnishings aren’t going to make it.
I’m trying to keep the departure a little quiet here at my current job as I don’t want to create waves even if I can’t stand who I work for, making it harder every day to come in and see the person I have very little respect for. I’ve only told a few friends of this move and maybe this isn’t the right path, maybe all my friends could offer more support? Or even help me with selling off the stuff I need to unload before the movers show up or the renters come in!
Any reasonable suggestions on how to start a check list for the move and get those items sold?
pennylanelost investigating
I’ve been trying to find a way to move here off and on since I first visited in 2002. I have somehow managed to live in England for probably a total of 1 year since then with the help of study abroad programs and my English boyfriend, but never in London. I use to scan the UK VISA section for hours…UK Yankee…trying to find some way. Highly Skilled Migrant…nay…and the laws keep on getting more stringent. Here and now…perhaps its meant to simply be a once held American girl’s dream.
