Pit bulls are a wonderful and hugely misunderstood breed. The name is actually a sort of generic catch-all that includes the breeds American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier.
I have been around these dogs all my life and have never met one I didn’t like. Unfortunately, irresponsible and cruel owners have led to the stigma that all pit bulls are violent and aggressive, and while their pedigree can indeed be traced to bull-baiting and dog-fighting, when properly raised and trained, they make fantastic, energetic, loyal and affectionate pets. They do tend to be a bit stand-offish and aggressive around other animals if not socialized at a very early age, so that is something I will definitely need to make a point of.
I would appreciate any insights from pit bull owners who may read this. Meanwhile, here is a link to a very reputable rescue project here in Seattle.
