How I did it: Sitting down with list of monthly and annual expenditures and matching each with a realistic financial goal that is within an income was the toughest part. It took discipline to face the facts and see where the real cash flows were and to correct some bad habits. Lessons & tips: Living on a budget is a lifelong endeavor. It's simply a tool; a mechanism to understand and control how we spend and invest our money. Resources: Hearing about the unfettered fiscal policies of Congress is what got me going.

How I did it: I had a great budget when I was married, and we had no debt at all. Then after the divorce, my income plummeted and I became very ill. Everything had to change as I found myself getting depressed over bills. The first thing I did was go through all my expenses in Quicken (software, worth it!), and made a huge list of them. I’ve gotten a bit spoiled going to a liberal arts college in the northeast. There are a lot of people there with a lot of money and nice things and I feel like I sort of have to keep up.
Going to Sydney (without enough money…) should help me, especially since Swift NEVER spends money (I was with her the first time she ever went to an ATM!) and is really excited about living like poor college kids, which is what I should be doing anyways, since that’s what I am.
