Start Investing Money

I grew up in a family, that most people would consider poor. My father was not very educated, and my mom, although intelligent, did not graduate high school. My dad rented the house I grew up in for over 17 years, from our neighbor and friend. The rent started out at about 50.00 a month, and I think it rose to around 150.00 before he died at the age of 74. He had no investments and did not understand anything but, “tucking away” money for a rainy day. I now am married, and have 2 boys, I have some money saved, and now want to start an IRA and also invest in mutual funds. I want more for my kids than I had growing up. I want them to know about investing and, and having a better life. Where do I start? I know some things about it, but would love any input from people who are investors on any level.
