A few weeks ago I got a new desk that has no drawers or storage, so everything that was being stored in the old desk ended up on the floor.
Today I took a few minutes to clean some of the clutter off the floor. I’d say I’m half way there.

Prof. Wormwood is an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky!
And before I start the final round of my dissertation research, I need to start with a clean slate. This week, the office MUST be organized and cleaned up. It MUST.

by looking at the picture, but my office in now almost ready for moving. The file cabinets each have a sticky note on them that says EMPTY. Most of those boxes you see have labels that say TOSS OUT. The books are all sorted. Most are going to be donated. The school is going to arrange to send our unwanted books to someplace like East Old Nogravistan where there will be a needy but virtuous school for nurses. (Not my problem) Every student that comes into my office now gets asked to shop my books. Several have taken me up on the offer and walked out rather happy.
My boss says I can have my journal articles all scanned so I promptly delivered 2 boxes of said articles to the secretary and told her the deadline was December. She said fine, no problem. I was astounded!
I will be taking home personal stuff like pictures, dishes, and the radio, two boxes of books, one half a box of papers and a jump drive with most of my library on it. Also the office chair and the desktop computer.
This is really good. I’m getting my office all cleared up long before I have to retire. I doubt I’ll be buying many more professional books over the years and now I can get nearly all my journal articles via downloads. I love modern technology.

Every time I go home from work now I carry back with me a tote bag full of stuff I know I will want at home during the big move out. I will eventually need to make a car trip in order to carry home some stuff like big pictures, but I can manage to get most of the stuff home by doing it gradually.

I brought a pile of boxes that were left over from my mom’s stuff up to the office. I brought a few things home. I have now pretty much cleaned out my desk. There is still stuff in my desk, but nothing that needs sorting. I haven’t touched the file cabinets yet. I am avoiding them.

We’re going to have to move out of the building soon. It’s not at all clear what will happen to our stuff. I really don’t have room at home. I’m going to move all my real personal stuff home soon so that will not get lost in the shuffle.

because I found out that within some few months we are all going to have to temporarily move out of the building totally so that new heating/ cooling system can get installed, seismic work can be done, asbestos gets removed, and a big general make-over is done. Nobody is sure what exactly tthis move thing means. All my stuff may go to storage, we may be seaparated in temp. offices here and there, we may mostly work from home, who knows? We’re making plans to have a huge book shipment to Afganistan or something like that, and people are talking about getting some industrial strength scanners around so that old paper stuff can go. It’s all quite unclear. But meanwhile, I’ll tidy the place up..or not. We’ll see.

My office looks better because I began with the bookshelves. They have been neatened up now but I do have one pile of stuff to take care of that is still there. I also cleaned up the small desk drawers where I keep the office supplies and things like that. I’ve neatened up the coat cupboard and another that has some misc stuff. But I still have th BIG ones to tackle…the file cabinets. At least they are closed and you can’t see how disorganized they are until you pull the drawers open.
