"I fell in love with a puppy..."
How I did it: I avoided dogs since I was about 5 and since neighbor's dog happen to bite me, almost removing my hand in the process (well - maybe it wasn't that bad, but I still got some scars)... I didn't have a phobia - i just really didn't like their company and felt somewhat uneasy around them.
Then my husband's friend from work had some puppies he wanted to find homes for and... hubs brought an idea of a puppy home. To be honest I didn't really think it was a good idea, but after we've seen the puppies I was totally sold - soooo sweet and cute and cuddly and...oh...so helpless - if you are scared of dogs please go play with the puppies!!! If you never had this opportunity before just try and see for yourself - they were only about a week old when I've see them first - hardly bigger than a fat hamster: no sharp teeth, no snarling, no growling, hell - they hardly moved at all... those were the beasts I was terrified of majority of my life ?!? I couldn't help but laugh at myself a little and decided to learn more about dogs and give them a fair chance in improving their image (in my head of course:). Long story short: I was able to see the pups at 4 weeks old again, and one of them just happened to pick me (oddly enough - the one who I petted the most before - could he possibly remember me? hmmm... at only 8 days of age - quite impressive).
He came home with us few weeks later and is going to be year and a half soon. He's the sweetest dog you'll ever meet, and I train him to be a therapy dog - and most importantly I can't imagine my life without him :)
Sorry, got a bit off the subject there... the bottom line is this: if you scared of dogs start from the puppies - there is hardly anything to be scared about and you just might make a friend...
Lessons & tips: Really just what I said before - all it took for me was seeing dogs in the earliest stages of their life.
Getting a dog is a serious decision and big responsibility, I don't suggest you should get one unless you are ready for it and know what you're getting into. But I'm sure you knew that already ;)
Hope this helps somebody (even just a little)
