i always wanted to learn finnish since i heard one of my favorite bands ensiferum. Also i am adopted and i told my parents about the band ensiferum and i was very surprised to hear then tell me my birth father was like 100% finnish. recently in school i just did a group project on finnish immigrants coming to america and after watching videos of interviews with native born fins hearing the language made me want to learn it!
How to learn finnish
How I did it: i signed up for the concordia language camp called salolampi. i went there one month every summer since i was really young, and i still go every year.

I’ve already taken a huge step towards my goal. I applied for Finnish philology (and it is my second faculty). Ah. Wish me luck.
Minä rakastan Suomi!
Aaaand unfortunately that’s pretty much the limit of my Finnish, with the exception of random words like kissa (cat), punainen (red), huono (bad), lusikka (spoon), etc… and words I learned from my Finnish death metal bands, words like kuolema (death), verivalta (bloodbath), teurastaja (butcher), and rautaketju (iron chains).
So I’ve still got a while to go yet.
Oh well. Finnish is awesome.
The fall/winter guide for UVIC continuing education is coming out. Last year they offered a beginner’s Finnish class in the evenings. Hopefully they do the same this year, as I plan on signing up for it.
While my attempt at taking a French class failed miserably, I did enjoy learning Japanese from scratch and therefore I think that method will be fine for learning Finnish. Fingers crossed!

I searched on youtube and google and some good sites and videos came up.
I was going to learn words like hello and stuff but I thought of it as a big boring so I am learning colours first… why? I don’t know haha but I am looking at other finnish words so I become familar with them.
So far I know:
kiitos -thank you
kitta -cat?
Hei -Hello
And some colours but I can’t spell them yet nor can I say most. I need to practise writing, reading, listening and speaking as I go along. First I am just getting myself used to the words – I find the way they look quite scary because most words and long and the order of the letters is something completely new to me!
Maxime is back, for now!
I’m not studying much, but I’m trying hard whenever I get the determination of writing something that makes sense.
Like, when I really want to write something in Finnish.
Tonight, I wrote a 3 lines message to Emilia on her LJ. It took me almost half an hour, but I’m pretty confident that it actually makes sense!
Well, Emi will tell us. I’d feel really stupid if it didn’t make sense… LOL!

Hopefully for my birthday I will be getting some things of amazon to help me learn finnish as they is no resources where I live for learning it which sucks. Also I don’t think I will learn it until after my exams which will be June.

I don’t know how much time will it take me, but I’m moving to Rovaniemi. I hope it could be by summer 2010. I have to earn some money, find an activity to do there (either work or study), and speak the language.
I fell in love with the city the moment I arrived. It was kind of mystical. I fell in love with Barcelona ten years ago when I first came here. I promised myself someday I would be living there. It took me six years. I hope Finland will take me at least half that time.
One of the first steps: learning finnish.
anybody willing to help? =P
Cheers to all of you! =D
