How I did it: I sold everything and bought a pack; then I hit the road in CA with 40 somthing dollars. I worked my way across and there was only me and God ( Whom I found out there in the vastness of existance.) Read how I did it…
How I did it: looooong story short, i jumped on a train from Seattle Washington, and took it to Portland, then hitch hiked, and ended up in Reno.. hitch hiked on accident back north too a place called Herlong, and camped by a huge lake for a couple days, then walked and camped along the way in a few small towns, hitch hiked just outside Salt Lake City in a place called Spring Creek, if you want to hear more email me or something, hillbilly_hobo@hotmai… Read how I did it…

gdjester1 Planning for a hike across IL
I won’t be able to do the hike across the US for several years. I just don’t have the money. However I’m not going to let that stop me all together. This Aug and Sept. I will be hiking East to West across the state of IL. I will follow the American Discovery trail to the quad cities in Iowa. This should take a little over 2 weeks and 210 miles. Now a bad start.
Hello, I’m glad i found this great site. For a long time i have been wandering what life is all about. I have been planing on doing something for so long now i cant remember. I now know this is what i need. i need to see America, the land and the people. I need to restore the life in me. Please if anyone has suggestions, sites, or info please email me at joshuhamrick@hotmail.com. I’m 26 and in july i will be 27. I want to leave then.
For you adventersome people who are walking across America, I have a serious question for you. Do you have mates, lovers, spouses, and if you do, how do THEY feel about your walk? Do they feel left behind for what to them seems a frivolous reason? How do you deal with that? Did the relationship survive the walk?
For the past 4 months I’ve been planning to walk across America. I plan on doing a shake down walk from Wilber Nebraska to Franklin Nebraska, about 200 miles. I have been walking 8 to 10 miles a day for two months. Can someone help me out by a list or something on what i will all need on my trip? And were do you sleep if you can’t make it to town or camp ground?
Thank you to all the supporters of Walk Across America for Horses. All of your ideas and help have been so wonderful and helpful. Just did my 1000th mile and crossed the Mississippi River. YEA!!!! Never thought I would make it this far. If it is a goal of yours all I can say is go out and do it. I have been walking for almost 3 months now and don’t regret a minute of it. Just make sure you buy moleskin for the blisters and drink lots of water. www.awalkfohorse.webs.com
When life is the poorest it’s the richest… having to take the challenges that come without the cash on hand. That’s the best way to get those stories… being newly retired – and wondering if there is something else besides wondering how I can travel the USA without worrying about the car breaking down and a place to stay… as I write this the realization that the only thing holding me back is me… wish I could join up with a team to walk the USA… to lose my 70 pounds I just can’t seem to get down and to become physically better to gear up for that last next phase of life…
I am thinking about doing to raise awareness about the importance of a creative journey – to urge our country to add arts and creativity to public education. Would like to walk with one or two liked minded people. I am a children’s book author.. my book “The North Star” is all about the journey – filled with challenges, but also hope.
I started in Annapolis, have gone through DC and am currently in Vienna, VA. I’m also raising money and awareness for Free the Slaves—freetheslaves.net
Things you may want to bring that you (or at least I) didn’t think of: Mole Skin for sensitive feet areas that may get blisters (especially behind your big toes), something to read for when you are camping out or crashing for the day with no available internet or TV, extra phone batteries, a Twitter account to consistently update where you are and where you are sleeping, under armor, nail clippers, some type of carrying bag for extra stuff you may buy (e.g. food) that won’t fit in your pack, a sign to pin to your bag announcing what you are doing. A man I met while couchsurfing told me to put duct tape on my feet to help prevent blisters as well, which actually works.
Make a couchsurfing.org account. This is an international social networking site where people lend their couches to travelers and backpackers. It is very useful in large cities where you basically have to find a motel/hotel to stay in. I stayed with a very kind man in DC for two days. I also have couches to stay in 3 out of the next four days. You may want someone helping you from the outside with this. I don’t have internet connection often, so my sister does all my couchsurfing work and calls or texts me when she finds a couch to stay on. It is an amazing resource.

I love walking, and in about 2 weeks we’ll find out if I still do. I’m hoping to find all the info I need, plan a route and beat feet starting mid-may and being back in time for turkey! I’ll be starting either in Washington or Oregon and aiming for Cali, Vegas, Oklahoma, North Carolina and finally New York. If this is a bad idea please let me remain ignorant to it.
