Well I took it for 3 years in HS, and I’m in class for it in college now. It’s easiest reading german, but speaking it is the most difficult for me

i have bought bookc and a cd to start with and will join classes next year, once my TEE is out of the way. i have kept in touch with someone i met in germany and told them my wish to learn german and i can practice through letters! excited to achieve this goal :D
I really want to be able to speak this language fluently. I learned it a little at school. but then forgot it once i came to college. Id like to get back into it.
The best advice I would give is to thoroughly learn the grammar – repeat the tables til you dream about them.
Practice little phrases so you get used to the combinations of endings.
If you’re struggling to memorise, try writing it out.
Read something that you might read in your own language – women’s magazines can be a good place to start.
Listen to e.g. BBC World Service when they have news in German.
Find a partner or group and speak regularly – I found a beer or two helped me lose my inhibitions at first!
Try as best as possible to get the sound of the vowels right.
If possible, live in a German-speaking country for a while. If you are with any others of your own nationality while there, agree that you will only speak in German with each other. It’s weird at first but you soon get used to it.
Finally, enjoy the moment when you dream in German or you get asked what part of Germany you’re from. Then you know you’ve made it.
Good luck to you all.
I need to practice more, but the thing that helped me the most was immersion. I lived in Prien am Chiemsee, Germany for two months and then in Vienna for four months. It was great! (Picture is in Munich)
I listen to rammstein and I can now figure out some words…anyays great band….rock on
