    Overwhelmed. 2 months ago

I am going to return about 12 books to the library and concentrate on the others. I get in over my head. People out there just write books too fast for me to keep up!

No more than 5 at a time from now until – from now until I – from now until my computer breaks down & I can escape from the 43T black hole sucking my soul out my fingertips.

I feel like a roadtrip – no prep, no notice, just go.

    help me

    on Music is so enlightening!

The textbook I had about music was so dry & detailed in a dry way I had a hard time putting the pieces together. It was like trying to learn about the flight of birds by killing on, dissecting it, and examining each piece separately. This new book keeps the idea of music alive and explores it, explaining as it goes.

Just started reading 2 months ago

This is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obsession, by Daniel J Levitin, former rock musician, sound engineer, studio producer, and now neuroscientist.

As one review says: he discusses neurobiology, neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, empirical philosophy, Gestalt psychology, memory theory, categorization theory, neurochemistry, and exemplar theory in relation to music theory and history

    and makes it all understandable!

The breakthroughs in brain imaging & research are opening up SO MUCH interesting info in so many fields of research.

DAMMMMMM!!! I wish I could live 8 or 10 simultaneous lives so I could learn & do everything I’d like to do!

I'm going to check for the most recent 2 months ago

articles & info about neurobiology in general, and in areas related to learning in early life, in various subjects, various disorders, etc

Also, new articles on advanced image technology & its application to ancient documents, parchment, etc, bringing writing to light that was previously impossible to read.

In looking about the Internet 2 months ago

for titles fitting into the “history from the bottom” description, I came across this site:

    http://www.thehumanknownproject.com/

where people can post stories of their personal world. Some posts seem more like journal entries that may not end up being historically interesting, IMO, but some are very interesting. The whole idea is cool.

I’ll explore it some more, and might even post some of the stories my great-aunt wrote up before her descent into Alzheimer’s robbed her of her memory. She wrote very well & touched on topics of current, not just historical, value.

So many people take their daily lives for granted, as dull & uneventful, yet others would see their lives as fascinating & exotic in comparison with their own. Think about it yourself – what do you do that so many people in the world would find unique?

The “history from the bottom” trend, if that’s what it is, I’m not that up on it all, is adding some great stuff for learning about life on this planet.

Picked up some books 2 months ago

on a few subjects. I looked through titles in the section for music appreciation. Most of them limit themselves to classical music & have bits of the actual music printed here and there. I can read music, but need an instrument to get the tune.

Even the ones for kids weren’t all that helpful. Lots of history, biographies, that kind of stuff. I guess I’ll have to break down & select a book for each style of music I want to learn to understand & appreciate more.

And there is always more to read in a million other subject areas!

I don't need any college credits, 3 months ago

so why put out the money for tuition? I’ll select subjects I want to learn more about, look at various course syllabi for possible books, also look in other sources for books, and do the studying on my own. I’m plenty motivated, really want to learn more, so I think this goal will progress well.

I’ve got a book on music and the brain I’m currently reading, that combines 2 of my interests – music, and neurobiology.
