Old-school charm. Love the Pullman.

I forgot to say we went to hear Steven Pinker talk about his new book. He’s a pretty charismatic speaker, but he “lectured from Powerpoint,” as it were, which wasn’t really necessary since his slides were just summaries of what he was saying. Also, his connections between language and human nature were sadly flat, as the idea that our languages reflect how we think, feel, and interact is… well… rather obvious. Perhaps the book got deeper into things, though.
David Lieberman. Theoretical evolutionary biology (sort of ;-)). Very cool, more of a summary soon I hope.
I just got home from hearing Stephen Hawking talk at Caltech. Of course the place was packed. A friend of a friend got us fantastic seats, so we were in the 5th row and had a great view of him while he was talking. That was interesting, watching him manipulate his computer.
I enjoyed the evening. Our group consisted of some people from work who I am quite fond of. I’m always happy to spend and evening with John and Lynn. So I give the evening an A++ for the talk and the company!
I wasn’t planning on going to a lecture so soon but there was a talk at work that fit into my schedule, so I’m taking advantage and completing this goal for this month. At least I get credit for attending the talk.
This will help this goal get completed. If I go to 6 events in 6 months, I will call this goal complete.
Lang Elliot and Will Hershberger are my new heroes.
At the Coolidge, in support of Anya’s short screenplay, which she wrote in a Grub Street class last summer. Hooray for her!
