From Edale to the Cheviots
My friends and I have been talking about doing this for years, and it looks like we might actually manage this time. Just a case of getting people on board and out of work! We have a little bit of experience, and have been going on more and more walks at weekends to up our average distance to about 16 miles a day.
I can’t see this happening any time in the next nine months so I’m moving it from my list. I’ll get back to it when there’s a chance of it being achieved.
I reckon, taking it nice and slow and easy, this will take 3 weeks. July is looking likely – good weather, longish days and before summer vacation.
The Pennine Way is very long, At the end your feet will pong! Seriously though, Go for it! Remember, you can’t hope to achieve such a demanding walk unless you have a couple of years to do training walks in all types of weather and terrain. This is what I did with my walking buddies and we completed the walk in fourteen days in 1986. It is tough but the outcome is an experience that will stay with you forever! If I wanted to do the walk now, as an older walker (57), I would do it over at least a month and that would be as and when I manage to retire.
...do this. I wonder how many miles a day you have to do if you want to do it in a week or two? It would be quite fun to do it alone, though there is the safety aspect, since I can’t use the phone except for texting.
I started walking a couple of years ago to try and lose weight. Never managed to walk enough to see any visible difference in my shape, but I was able to walk 11 miles in one day, which is good enough for me. Earlier this year I got a dvd of the Pennine Way with a walking magazine, and the scenery looks breathtaking. It would be a fantastic personal achievement for me to be able to say I walked it.
