Not buying... but renting. ;)  — 4 months ago

I’m actualy moving into a cute little cottage. It’s not isolated as I’d like it to be, it’s actually in an apartment complex. But it is a solitary cottage… surrounded by other solitary cottages. Haha. I’m pretty happy though.

I’ve started to slowly find pictures off the internet of cottages that I like. Different rooms I enjoy, etc. I started a little design scrapbook so that I can keep track of it all. I am saving slowly. But hopefully by the time we are finished having kids we can buy one! Even if it’s just tiny.

I’ve always lived in crazy areas with lots of kids to play with or babysit, but I really feel like I just want to get away from all of it. I have dreams of owning my own little comfy cottage someplace where I can relax with my cats and just hang out. I always feel too caught up and lost in time – and I’m only 16! And I know I won’t be doing this for a while but I want to as soon as I can afford it. :)

My thoughts on cottages....  — 2 years ago

Cottages are soooo much better than cabins! Id rather have one cottage than 7 cabins!

On the Dirt Road to Cottage Ownership  — 2 years ago

The money is nearly saved, we have a Realtor, and we picked an area where plenty of land is available. Rather than a mortgage (can’t afford to pay rent in NYC and do that too), we will buy a smaller 1 to 2 acre plot, which we can afford cash. The plan is “buy land, build cottage, add on later.” We expect to have bought land by late Spring. We’re building ourselves, so I’ve already gotten blueprints and plans. Very exciting! This is a picture of one of the pieces of land we’re looking at.

Best decision ever!  — 2 years ago

    Worth doing!

My boyfriend and I bought a cottage in the Muskokas, Ontario. I have lived in downtown Toronto for the last 10 years, and, found myself not ready to leave the city outright, but, craving the ability to relax without feeling guilty (an unfortunate symptom of big-city living—I think its an energy thing). After a bit of searching around, we fell in love with a lake and made our first property purchase ever (We decided that a cottage was more important to us than buying a home at this point). Now we continue to rent an apartment downtown, but, have this fantastic weekend getaway only 2 hours away. Every worry melts away as soon as you open the car door at the marina and you get your first breath of pine-scented clean air. I highly recommend it!

I love the woods. Yes, I’m a country-girl in hiding. I can thank my dad for my love the of the sticks.
I can imagine my dream rustic little cottage/cabin in the woods, looking out over the sparkling lake, canoe tied at the dock, laid back in a deep chair with my sandels kicked off, birds singing, chipmunks scampering….
Then the misquotos bite, a see a wood tick on my leg, the water pump seizes up, and the nosy-neighbors coming over to drink all my beer…..grrrr….where’s my fly-spray?

So me and the man have decided that if we are going to save for anything it will be for this first. Property in the city is too expensive and we figure a chunk of land to escape to on that is our very own would be so great. So far the savings aren’t huge but at least we have the process started.

    YAY

Edit: looks like we have decided that a treehouse is the way to go, this really inspired us www.treehouse-company.com
