letterboxer is thinking ahead to new goals for 2010!

Well, I guess he was ready... 17 months ago

...he picked it up in about 10 minutes. I started him on the grass coasting down the hill just dangling his feet (so he could easily touch them down). Then I had to leave to take my daughter to an appt. and by the time I came back he was pedaling down the hill on the grass. He moved onto the pavement and although he has a little trouble getting started, he’s really pretty steady. He even was turning in little circles. My guess is he’ll have lots of fun in the next few days practicing his new fun skill! Which is when I’ll have to take some pictures because today happened so fast that I didn’t even take ONE!!

So I don’t think I can take credit for “teaching my son to ride a bike”, but I did get him started and he, with a little help from his big sister, taught himself.

    My goodness.... 17 months ago

...I’ve been remiss on teaching my littlest to ride a bike. He wasn’t ready two summers ago when we tried and last summer we were so busy. This summer, its time! He’s 6 (will be 7 in Sept) and I’m sure he’s ready. Time to drag out the little “clown bike” we’ve had for each of others to learn on (its so little he can easily touch both feet).

As of two weeks ago, he finally is flying with 2 wheels. I’m so happy. Last weekend he went with me on my Sat. morning run. It was the best thing ever. I can now scratch this off my list.

Golden Sunshine Boy has some neurological delays, so he hasn’t been able to learn to ride yet, though we’ve tried several times. He’s older now and I think he could do it, with some patience on everyone’s part. It’s scary for him because he knows his body is different and that riding a bike is a complex series of commands. He has to trust that his muscles will do what they need to do even if his brain isn’t firing quite right at the moment. He’s more confident than he used to be, but this is a big step. I hope he can do it.

tires filled, and he was willing... 4 years ago

but, the first time I let him go, he took a bad spill and got quite discouraged. He was doing well too, he traveled a good fifty feet by himself. As soon as he realized I wasn’t holding him up anymore, he veered into the grass, streetside, then wiped out on the street. He skinned his knee and both elbows. He got back on, but was afraid to try going solo and bailed everytime I let go almost instantly. He’s got a smaller bike, I think I’ll try that one for now and see if that works out.

i need to go out and buy an air pump and fill his tires up. The poor kid could barely pedal with the tires so low. He’s very inspired though as a few of his friends are already riding their bikes without training wheels. I know he’ll catch on quick.

Ryan gets out of school next week 4 years ago

That’ll give us plenty of time to get to work. I’ve picked out the perfect spot already. A long, fairly straight stretch of black top leading to a park near our house that is surrounded on both sides by thick, lush grass. After next Friday, we’ll have plenty of time to spend on getting it down. Can’t wait to pass down another thing to my son, and watch him grow even more!

Nothing better than watching his face as he ‘got it’.

He’s going to be six this summer and really wants to ride with the older kids in the neighborhood. I think he’s ready. Guess we’ll find out soon enough.
