I dyed some batik fabric in my tenth grade art class, but don’t remember the process at all. I want to figure it out again, dye some myself, and incorporate them into some textile art.

i did this when i was in elementry school and i was so excited about it for months and i could never get it together enough to do it agian then i forgot, now my intrest has been sparked and i am totoally gonna get into this in the summer.
I was in 5th grade when my art teacher taught us the art of batik in making wall hangings on heavy cloth and handmade dyes we made from local plants by boiling the berries or parts which contained the color. It was such a great experience that I now want to teach my 8 year old son.
However I’d like to know the differences in making lighter fabrics with batik, if there is a difference that is….and it’s been many years since I last batik’d. I am having some trouble however navigating this site. Or perhaps I misunderstand its mission. Are there some explicit instructions or is it a forum-based site? Also, are there certain dyes now that are best for batik that don’t require the tons of pots to boil and make our own color? :-)
Thanks, Yvette a.k.a. busy mom who doesn’t want purple hands for a week.
i’ve been doing a lot of tie-dye recently and i love experimenting with stuff like that and my next step would be batik, i think it is so beautiful and i want to learn how to make it!
The traditional “Batik pesisiran” is more colorfull than the Jogja’s one. Though my grandma’s parents produced it, the next generation know very little about it. I want to spare my time.
batiking is an amazing and freeing art form- i love doing it. I learned as a teenager in art class, and loved it so much that I ended up taking an independent study course on it the next semester. I have been doing it ever since. It is very simple, but you can make the pieces as complex as you desire. One of the things i love the most is trying to work around “mistakes” and incorporate them into the design. Batiking is just lovely!
