How to move to a new city by Mairhi

How I did it: I have changed cities (and countries) several times now. At times for academic reasons, at times because of work. And once I went for a shot holiday and... stayed for 4 years.:)

Whatever the reason for your moving, it takes determination to actually do it. My first move was actually the one when I went for a holiday and stayed. So it did not take much planning. Or money (I was on a  very tight student budget back then). But I believe I got first time lucky, as looking back I have no idea how I managed! (Without any money, contacts, job, apartment etc).
My moves after that have been much better planned.

Lessons & tips:
- when moving for the very first time, try not to do it on your own. It feels really rough and horrible at the beginning, so it is better to have someone to share your depression with:)
- try to find out as much as you can about the place you want to move (the quality of the university, when you're planning to study. Or the situation of the labour market. Especially now!). Read local newspapers!
- try to find contacts before you move. Internet is a bliss - e.g. you can try out couchsurfing.org. Even though intended for travelers, the club also has groups and lists where people can post their questions about all sorts of different things (including moving to another place).
 - save some money. Unless you are lucky enough to have everything organised for you (by a workplace, college etc), money does make a difference. There are many things that can go wrong (the new city has some taxes you have never heard of/ planned in your budget etc). It is always wise to have  a buffer.

Resources: Hospitality networks: www.hospitalityclub.org & www.couchsurfing.org. Get some good advice from the locals and meet new people (many cities organise monthly gatherings for locals and travelers to meet)

    Moving to Portland, OR 1 month ago

    I want to move to Portland, OR. Currently I live in southern OR about 300 miles from Portland. I’ve lived here my whole life, it’s my hometown, and I’m done waking up to the same bleak mountains daily.

    I currently have ZERO dollars, and in order to make this move, I’m going to have to save EVERY single paycheck I make until June.

    Born in DC, brought home across the bridge 2 days later and haven’t left yet.

    I love this city, I love the VA suburbs, I love that I hate the MD side but it’s time to leave.

    I will be back. I’ve always wanted to raise kids here and I WILL be back. Before I can be back though, I have to leave. This goal goes in part with earning my associates degree. Once I accomplish that, I will be able to figure out where to go for my Bachelor’s.

    Fall 2010 a decision will be made.
