How to own horses

How I did it: I bought my first pony when I was 19, and now I have another pony and a horse too. I saved up a lot of money, and also had help and advice from family who had already owned their own horses. Owning horses is not easy - I'd say the commitment is a huge as being married or having children! They are not a hobby, they are a lifestyle! If you aren't going to be willing to go to the farm twice a day to do such tasks as muck out, feed, water, groom, turn out, and exercise your animal, then don't get one. Horse owning isn't all about riding - riding is the cherry on top. If you just want to ride then go to a school or trekking center. If riding is all you care about you won't much want to get up early on cold winter mornings to fill haynets and water buckets! I wouldn't be without my horses, but sometimes I do think how much easier life would be without them. I wouldn't have nearly as much fun though :)
Lessons & tips: Do your research! There is a lot to learn about horses and ponies, and how to look after them properly. If you are buying a horse to ride I would recommend going for riding lessons first, and keeping them up on your own horse. Be prepared for how much money and time you will have to spend - not cheap on either count!

About 6 years ago I got my first horse and now I have two. I love owning horses especially since they are in my backyard.
Don’t stop dreaming people. If you are new to horses, then start learning now because owning a horse is a big responsibility.
