I’m a student journalism currently, one more year to go. But I realised I never want to be a journalist. So I’d like to follow library school to become a librarian. Libraries have always fascinated me and there are libraries everywhere so I’d be able to work wherever I want. I recently found this brochure for library school in evening classes. I’ll probably do it when I’m graduated.

The director did write that letter of recommendation, and I got three other solid letters, so I’ve done everything I can possibly do, I think. If I don’t get in this year, I have also applied to two other master’s programs, so I will start one of those non-library degrees instead and let library school be postponed indefinitely.
I applied last year and was rejected. That hurt my feelings. But I have been working in libraries since 1996 and I have an excellent reputation at work, so I think my rejection was an oversight. The library director has offered to write a letter of recommendation this year. I hope it will improve my chances. I am also giving a presentation at a library conference, so that should be impressive on my CV.
I learned very little in library school that actually prepared me for the “real world.” However, you need it to get a professional position, so there is no way around it if you want to be a librarian! My advice.. just get it over with as quckly as possible…
...you need to know going into it that the much-discussed “librarian shortage” is a lie.
This was really enjoyable as we covered so many varied topics and it really helped me when I started my first job to have that background in the different aspects of librarianship.
I’m working in a profession that might seem completely unrelated now, but it was my MLIS that opened those doors. The world would be a better place with more librarians running things…
