How I did it: I was lucky enough to go on a university-planned trip. I still had to pay, but I managed to save up enough money so that I could go. We flew from Chicago to Sofia with a layover in London. From Sofia, we had a rental bus take us to our hotel. It was called "Hotel Amethyst" in downtown Sofia, and I recommend it. It was magical.
Lessons & tips: Nodding your head means no and shaking your head means yes! You have to learn that or you will be very confused. Also, Bulgarians seem grumpy and exhausted to outsiders but when you actually interact with them they are the warmest, brightest, most helpful people on earth. Unless you're German. They kept telling me about how they hated "Those Germans." Hmm.. lucky I'm American, because it's one of the few countries that doesn't hate Americans yet.
Resources: I learned some Bulgarian words and phrases before I went. Also, I knew how to read cyrillic before I went, and even if you don't understand Bulgarian, learning cyrillic before you go is a very good idea. Check the internet, there are good online tutorials.

My co-worker is from Bulgaria and i find it so interesting to hear her stories and have her speak her language. I want to experience something different. Something that’s not London or Paris. I want to go to Bulgaria to see another part of Europe.

This is where my Dad grew up – Veliko Turnovo to be exact. I have heard him talk so many times about the beautiful countryside, the villages and towns – which he misses, still, decades after coming to Australia. I would dearly love to visit one day and see all the beautiful places my Dad talks about, for myself.

I went to Sunny Beach with a very large group of family and friends this year. There were both good and bad parts, to be honest. During the day, it was nice to wander about the stalls and shops, and there are bars galore! You could pick up hundreds of bargains, so I can’t fault it for that. Also, the weather was gorgeous, and there were quite a few tours available to go on. Unfortunately, in the evenings we were often approached by prostitutes, and as in a lot of tourist hot-spots, you REALLY need to keep an eye on any handbags that you’ve brought out with you. Travelling through Bulgaria on our way to other places we could see that it is quite a beautiful country, however I don’t think that I would return to Sunny Beach.

Definitely worth it! Skiing in Bansko was awesome and then the nights out I had in Sofia were great…Vodka by the bottle and beautiful ladies ;-)
I visited Bulgaria for 2 weeks and was able to finally be with my most amazing girlfriend again. I would go to Bulgaria again, without hesitation – with or without my baby!
