We adopted Lucy over a year ago and she was pretty big, so right away helping her lose wait was a goal. We’ve been extremely careful about her feeding times, and don’t leave food out for her to munch on all day. That’s been a little hard for both her and us. I think for her it’s a security issue, she checks her food dish frequently throughout the day. And she is very persistent about waking us up in the mornings. But she’s also very sweet and wonderful and we want her to be healthy! She’s lost a few pounds since we got her, and she still needs to loose a bit more, but she’s looking great and seems more comfortable!
kate79 is hoping things are turning around.
i have no idea what calvin’s weight is, but i do know that it’s more than it should be. visitors always comment on his “saggy belly”. calvin is a pretty stoic cat, but i know these comments have to sting.
the problem is that he has asthma. he has attacks if he runs the full lenght of the apartment. sigh however, i am trying to encourage more play until i can hear his breathing sound labored. he’s quite obsessed with the plastic innards of the rattly mice they sell at pet stores.
i’ve tried feeding half wet and half dry food, but he won’t touch the wet food. i was rather surprised as i was always led to believe it was like crack for kitties. that once the ate wet food, they wouldn’t touch dry.
i need to get a scale so that i can have some idea of his progress.
I’m trying to get mommy’s special treasure down to 10 pounds. I switched him to a diet of half wet food because I read that wet food has more protein and fewer carbs. I’ve also been trying to get him to bat a toy around a few times a day and made a chart for the refrigerator to record his weight each week. By the way, if anyone is wondering how to weigh a cat successfully all you do is weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding the cat and subtract. It’s incredibly simple but I would have never thought of it on my own.
We have two cats and when we first got them we used to free-feed them (i.e. have food constantly available in their bowl). Our vets then told us that we should weigh their food and only give them a certain amount twice a day. So now the boy gets 12g of food per feed and the girl gets 14g and they are at their ideal weight! Of course they whinge a lot but the vet said that cats SHOULD be constantly hungry which is the way they are in the wild. I want them to live long and happy lives and obesity will definitely shorten their lives and lead to more physical problems. Good luck everyone in trying to slim down your cats!
The new policy in the house is that if I’m eating meat, Finn’s eating meat. This makes him happy and cuts down on his eating grains in his catfood. So, protein and more time chasing the string seems to be doing the trick.
Well, I have received the Innova Evo food and started feeding it slowly to all 3 cats. Currently Bear is eating about 80% Evo…
I haven’t noticed any weight loss yet, maybe the scale will.
I weighed Bear this wknd and it turns out she weighs 15 pounds. My other 2 cats weigh 9 pounds so I figure she needs to lose about 6 pounds. I read that cats should lose no more than 1/2 pound per month, so at that rate it’s going to take her a year…ugh.
We’ve already started giving her smaller portions and are trying to include more protein in her diet. I have read about Innova Evo and I think I’m going to purchase that to boost their protein & fat intake, while reducing carbs.
She really needs to lose a couple pounds and I am determined to make it happen. I’ve read a few articles today about cats diets and I am going to make sure the food she eats is high protein & fat and low carbs.
I love you very much Bear & I just want you to be happy & healthy!
