I love being in the water, although it’s always been pretty much just me in my swimsuit.
I figure I might actually get started on this goal after the exam in November, maybe as a birthday gift to myself.
How I did it: I went to a resort city (Eilat, Israel) on the Red Sea, the water was crystal clear and blue. A friend who had gone 2 weeks prior went Scuba Diving and gave me a name of this place (with VERY reasonable prices), I called them booked a time, and when I got there they introduced me to my guide, he was very nice, helped me get my wetsuit on and explained all the equipment to me and taught me how to breath. Then we went to the wat… Read how I did it…

ive tried it once last 2 years..since then, i’m falling in love with it…definitely will dive again….
i found this terrifying at first – i really found it hard to cope being underwater with such restriction on my breathing. and there seemed to be so much to remember as far as safety was concerned. but after only an hour of practice we were in the ocean the next day. was feeling so nervous and nauseous beforehand and didn’t think i could do it. but i toppled over the boat backwards (not half as bad as you’d think) and yeah. even then at first i kept coming back to the surface after going down a few inches, but my ‘buddy’ was great and made me try and stay under. as we got lower and started to see the fish, it was really really worth it. did start to get a bit cold but SUCH an amazing experience. really want to do it again, and i seriously recommend it to you!
The dive was my first ever, never having even snorkeled before, so I didn’t even know what to expect. I did a short dive to 40 feet off the coast of Grand Turk, and saw all sorts of coral and tropical fish.
There are a couple of things that are difficult to do when you’re learning. I had particular difficulty coordinating breathing in through my mouth and out through my nose (used to clear your goggles if they get water in them), but eventually got it.
I think I’d like to try it again, although I’ll have to build my confidence up more before next time, since I wasn’t expecting it to be as physically (in terms of coordination) challenging.
Finally certified, and that last check out dive made it all worth while. It finally felt like FUN!
Since i am going to Puerto Rico in May, i am thinking that i will either take lessons prior to the trip and get certified there or take lessons once i get there. I’ve been looking a dive schools here in chicago, but the best one seems to be out in the suburbs which i am less than thrilled about, but we’ll see.
