Today I memorized all of Western Europe:
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands and Switserland.
It’s surprisingly easy once you have a working system.
I’m giving each country a number (from a peglist) so that I can test them when I’m not near a computer and my flash cards. This also helps me figure out exactly where on a map a country would be since I’m lumping them together in groups.
I make an associative image of the country name, I link the pegnumber to this
I then make an associative image of the Capital and link the country image to this. If the country and capital name is the same, I imagine the country image splitting itself up and forming 2 wholes like a germ does. x2, see?
I can recall everything I went through yesterday with ease.
The 10 countries I learned today went so quickly and easily, I want to do more… I think I’ll do South Europe tonight :-)

I want to learn every capital of every country in the world.
I’m going to try using the major mnemonic system. This means I use ‘pegwords’ which I’ve learned previously and associative images to make the country and capital stick.
I’ve learned my first 10 countries today and their associated capitals. Every northern European country.
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and United Kingdom.
I’ve also made flashcards of all of these to test myself.
I’ll try and learn all of Western Europe’s countries next.

Go to www.thinkalink.co.uk for cool ways to learn the World Capitals. For example…..OMAN, I MUSCAT my hair….Lewis HAMILTON in just his BERMUDA shorts, cor!!!....If you CAN BURRA like a mole, you’ll end up DOWN UNDER…...You STOCKHOLMS from IKEA (Swedish company)....M ALI has G Foreman on the ropes, BAM! A KO…..What does a KATHMANDU? Play with his NEPALS!...Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s MOLDOVA, it CHISINAU!!! Is it in folks? You know it is! All 228 have been linked (plus loads more categories) with cartoons to aid them. If you have a better link for any of the countries, then submit it. If the public like it, then your link along with your name, will appear in the book next year pubished by Scholastic Press. Check out the toon for Oman/Muscat, you’ll love it!

Pretty close
I already memorized the location of all the countries, so it’ll be easier. I memorized all the capitals of the countries in north America, central America, South America, and Europe. I’m workin’ on Africa, it’s hard ‘cus I gotta learn how to pronounce them, too!

I want to make a last push with this. I have Africa, Oceania and Asia perfect but I forget some in Europe (Montenegro, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Kosovo and Macedonia). I am quite good but not perfect on South America (forget Suriname and Guyana). I’m pretty bad on the Caribbean.
All the same, when I told J I was doing this he tried to catch me out with what he thought were obscure countries such as Bhutan and Tonga and I got them correct so I think I’m doing pretty well really!
Haha, my dad asked me why I am doing this, then said it is only useful if I can recite them in alphabetical order. So for example I could tell him what comes after Turkey. I fired back, “Turkmenistan, capital Ashgabat.” Muahahahaha.

Today I worked on South America and Oceania for a while but I’m not perfect on them yet. I’m pretty good on Africa now although I always forget Guinea (Conakry), Niger (Niamey) and Mozambique (Maputo) and I get muddled with the two Congo countries.

I worked on Africa today, I’m not perfect yet though. There are a lot of them to remember! I could have broken it down into regions but I like to throw myself wholeheartedly into these things.
I like this goal because it accomplishes something while I’m putting off other things! Productive procrastination, I like it.

Going well. I’m down with Asia and Europe. I’ve learned a lot! Considering I have a A-Level in geography, I am pretty clueless. I thought Brunei was in the Middle East…
I’ve just discovered there is a world capitals quiz on freerice.com, how wonderful!
