Backed up my laptop and my Blackberry!
Feels good!
How I did it: I scheduled the first back up for when I have time and then another time in 2009. This way , a back -up is always around the corner. It was easy to do and I can do other things while the system is backing - up.
Lessons & tips: Have more than one drive on your PC.

But it will mean being without my computer for a good long while as Apple works its Time Machine magic the first time. Then I will just have to set up a routine of backing up regularly- every couple of days.

re-organizing and deleting things I’m sure I don’t need anymore. The IRS refund check finally got deposited, and my spousal unit ordered an terabyte external hard drive for me, which should be here by the middle/end of the week. And then we’ll “time machine” this baby.

which should be sung to the tune of the Beatles song which goes “Getting better all the time.”
I have spent a hour or so clearing old files off the puter. Putting things in appropriate folders, etc. I’m about to do a bit more. And then I’ll get to do the same (though probably not tonight) thing for my back up hard drive on which I have duplicates and triplicates of some files due to when I “backed up” things.
The goal is to have both all nice and neat for when the IRS refund check comes in. Then we are going to buy two terabyte external hard drives (his and hers, don’t you know) and set them up to do Time Machine (the Time Warp song goes through my head every time I think of that program) back up on a daily basis. This sort of thing may seem like overkill but is becoming more important as I work on larger video and database projects.

I’m cleaning up my files and cleaning up my back up hard drive, so I can do significant back up. I think when I get paid I’m going to get another back up hard drive so I can do the Time Machine thing that comes on the newer versions of Mac OS. Not thrilling stuff but important. One of my artist friends just lost a bunch of work due to a hard drive crash. I hope to have it done this weekend and then to start doing the Time Machine thing at least once a week.

I pretty much spent the entire day on this. I’ve been trying to get the OS off of my slave drive (which used to be my hard drive), since I don’t need it there anymore, but there are things I need to back up first, and finding them is a frustrating treasure hunt.
I also found some… not-treasure… in the form of several gigs of nasty photos downloaded by my old roommate. That was a dirty, dirty window of perversion I wish I hadn’t looked into (and it takes a LOT to offend me).
I managed to (file by file) delete about 10 gigs from the slave drive, shuffled the music folders over, backed up the last month of photos and a massive random install folder, then tweaked things here, there & yon.
Now I have to defrag both drives (which may take all night but things should run a lot smoother afterwards). Blahhhhhhhhh. My fingers hurt and my brain is a binary nightmare.

My computer is a giant slug. I’ve filled both drives up to the point that programs are running in slow motion or crashing constantly and there’s only enough space for a week’s worth of photos left. It’s driving me crazy and wasting my time.
Instead, I should take the time to back things up and clear out my system. I need to back up everything on the external drive (I’d just done the pictures), then sort out the flash drive so I can transfer really important data to the laptop for burning.
Right now, I’m feeling digitally claustrophobic.

Did this today—tried to send a photo and realized my hard drive was too full, so instead of putting it off I just plugged in my HD and went to town. I’m feeling so much better!
