How I did it: It's easy.  Go to the local shelter, pay a small fee and you've got a friend for life.  Just be sure that you are willing to make the commitment to be forever home. 

Lessons & tips: Be patient.  It takes shelter animals a little while to adjust.  My cat and bunny each took almost a year to really get comfortable.  Lots of petting and unconditional love is helpful.
