Yesterday was the first time I’d been to an ice rink in decades, and Isak’s first time ever. The grade 1’s at his school all went, and I volunteered to go with them. I couldn’t believe they still have the same newbie skater bars as they did when I was a kid! I have vivid memories of flying around smashing into each other with those. There were lots of other first timers, a handful of kids who have had piles of lessons, and everything in between.
Watching Isak get out there I was reminded a bit of Bambie, but he’d built up his confidence a lot by the time we left, all smiles and apple cheeks. Everyone had an incredible time, I grabbed a schedule, and we’re planning to go back soon. It’s in walking distance from our house, and would work well on stir-crazy rainy days. 22 months ago
How I did it: While home for Christmas I visited www.portlandicearena.com and discovered the Open/Free Skate hours. After a couple of fays of puttering around and trying to find company I decided to sojourn forward to Open/Free skate on my own. I paid a five dollar admission ticket charge and two dollars to rent skates. Read how I did it… 23 months ago
