So one time when I was in Greece I was swimming in an ocean FULL of purple sea urchins. I mean the entire ocean was pretty much shades of purple, black, and blue from the water. It was awesome, until my friend stepped on one.
One day I was in the aquarium and I saw these urchins. I thought to myself, “these silly people, they have to go to an aquarium to see these purple guys, but I, I was able to swim in an ocean full of them. I was invited into their home, these suckers-I feel so more accomplished than this.” So I’m walking around thinking about how bad-A I am and lo and behold a whale shark swims over my head. I thought to myself..I would be a total bad-A if I swam with one of those suckers!
So ever since then I daydream and research and talk about swimming with whale sharks and whenever I can’t stand the ordinary everyday life I go into my whale shark state…sigh.
How to swim with whale sharks
How I did it: We booked a tour with ecotravlemexico.com when we were in Cozumel last July. It was a long trip up to Punta Sam (past Cancun) and then a several hour boat ride to open ocean where the whale sharks were.
Once we got there, we realized that we were the only boat out that day, and there were over 200 whale sharks around us at the time. We spent the day there swimming and playing in the water with the sharks.
