Learning Sitar — 2 weeks ago
I just bought a sitar, and although I can use it in a number of “western” ways, it would be nice to know some basics about how it is normally played

caliegirl has wasted today...
Now where the hell can you get sitar lessons??
I love the sound of the sitar! I’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument, but stayed away from guitar, becuase everybody learns to play the guitar, so I want to learn sitar, but they’re so expensive :S.
Worth doing!
Definitely worth doing! I only got it a few weeks ago, but I can play basic stuff. So relaxing, a real mental workout. Indian music theory is very different from western.
I’ve been playing guitar for years, and had a sitar a while back, but it wasn’t much good/couldn’t keep tune. Now I finally have a decent sitar from Rikhi Ram’s place in Delhi. It’s where George Harrison bought his. I can now play Norwegian Wood, no hassles, and also the riff from ‘She Sell’s Santuary’ by The Cult. Not exactly classical ragas, but a start. I want to play Anada Shankar type stuff, kind of wig out psychadelia. Anyway, here’s a link to Rikhi Ram’s, top store & nice guys for anyone who is after a good quality sitar. (pic is of my new sitar, which is a bit smaller than my old ‘regular’ one, has proper machine heads on the main strings, and a pick up! It sounds great acoustically, and is easy to plug in and go crazy with…)
If anyone has some sitar tab/music, please can you send me a link. Cheers!
Worth doing!
So the last few weeks of learning have been great. I’ve really enjoyed learning from my guru. I still have so much to learn. This next month we will begin learning ragas. After I learn my first raga, I think I will mark this as “done”
how hard can it be? And it makes that cool sound.
Wonder where I can get one? And find someone who knows how to play to show me the basics?
