have less stuff

Always a work in progress 1 week ago

With 2 kids who’s interests and shoe sizes change anually, there is a constant cycle of accumulating and purging. I might admit that I’ve become slightly obsessive or OCD about having too much clutter – so in order for my brain to be clear, my space needs to be a reflection of that. I’ve gotten less emotionally attached to “things” over time so it’s not difficult to purge; however it’s a never ending cycle which I’ve come to terms with.

Since we are getting ready to move... 2 weeks ago

We are in a full on purge. I try to do this every time I move. I look for things that have been undisturbed for a long time. Things wrapped in yellowed newspaper.
I always cull books and clothes. But sometimes it’s the things you ignore. The oh-I’ve-always-had-that-so-I-always-will type of stuff.
I got rid of these two “fancy” dragon collectibles I’ve had since I was a teen. They are really pretty, and I can remember them being expensive…but WTF…I am never going to put them out on a shelf and admire them again. Should I cart them around for all of eternity just because the cost $X 20 years ago?
Maybe somebody will find them and love them instead of me keeping them on the top shelf of the closet until the end of time.

I moved into a new flat, where i have a smaller room, so i just cut down on all the junk. So now there’s no junk, just essentials. Yey.

1/2 price books 9 months ago

I dropped off a medium sized load of books and 20-30 cds and got 57 bucks for them. Today I’m going to go through our vcr tapes and dvds and add them to the batch I’m bringing up to them tomorrow.

Hard Hard Day 9 months ago

The day before yesterday we went through All of our boardgames and decided which ones were okay to get rid of (sell, that is). It was not easy, but we need the money and the space. Also, these are games that we probably haven’t touched for five years.

yesterday was the hard part…

I went through All of my books and decided which I would be willing to sell. They’re mostly all in these plastic containers in the garage, as I had to move them out of the basement about a year ago to make room for the Boy’s bedroom area. In any case – I reduced the amount of book I now own to somewhere between a half and two-thirds of what I had to begin with. My oldest daughter intercepted about 10 or 15 of them, but it was still pretty difficult at times.

Nothing like changing 12 months ago

We’re renovating…and I’ll be changing rooms in about 1 month. Packing up my things has been a nice way to sift through what I don’t need or want. When we had originally moved here, it seemed like my family just threw everything into boxes and off we went, bringing all the crap along with the valuable. I hate that idea. A new space deserves to be honoured.

I need less stuff because my place is small, but I also want less stuff because I feel hemmed in and have so much trouble keeping my belongings tidy!
