Love is the crutch
That is used to hold you in place
And I want out
I want nothing to do with your dreams

Anti depressants chased with whiskey
Leave a bitter taste on a jagged tongue
This fed up mind closes these burnt out eyes
No more than a pile of flesh blood piss and shit
A brutal self portrait locked away in a cold cabinet
A statistic a number another lesson in the classroom

The statues of our past are fading
We cling to all those memories
And distant vision will reveal
A skyline void of yesteryear
Far away to those lands unknown
We travel when we are alone
Where the sun never fades
And time always seemed to wait
It’s a sign of the times
A certain sign of change
Maturity and progression
At a cost we grow away from the past
And forget the things
That once made us laugh
My statue is gone
Filled by a vacant lot
And all who now shall walk across
Will never understand my loss

So, since everyone and their mother has been getting published lately, I’d like to sit down and mail off some submissions once I send the school’s literary magazine off to the printer.

• Jelly Bucket: prose or up to three poems by June 1.
• Harpur Palate: Short prose or long poems by April 15.
• The New Quarterly: for the List issue, by June 30.
• (&): literary erotica issue, by June 1.
• New collAGE by April 15.

I just got a call from the woman in charge of the poetry contest I entered back in February and found out that I took third place.

I’m really excited because this is my first “real” publishing credit. I know it isn’t The Paris Review or anything, but it’s a start!
