perform music live

With or without a band.
Original song (or songs).
Venue not important, but it only counts if it’s legit (as in: not a friend’s living room).
An open mic night in a coffee shop would count.

I’ve been musically-inclined since childhood and played trumpet all through school. I started playing guitar at the end of high school and that sparked a passion for composition. I started recording in my dorm in college and since graduating have been making mostly beats in Reason. I’m working on integrating the beats with an electric guitar and doing some cool stuff with Max/MSP. If I can come up with something compelling, in a performance context, then I’ll want to show it off… and I’m in the bay area now so there’s plenty of opportunity. I’m definitely not a performer, so I’ll have to get over that, but if I got a good response from a live performance, that would be one hell of a high. Until then, I’ll be working on the composition end.

i wanna gig sooo bad. it’s this bug that’s just eating away at me. but i kinda dont know where to start. where should i start looking for places to perform?

Just had a gig, went really well. First time I ever really enjoyed gigging- I went busking to prepare this time.

Even if all you can find is some obscure coffee shop, get yourself out there.

There was a newspaper article about me and that’s how the gig found/called me.

Just build up hype and you’ll have a job (paying or no) in almost no time at all!

Okay okay, so this is similar to “become a rock star”. It’s a little more realistic, though, so I’ve added it as well.

I really want to perform my own music live, but seeing as I’m a little dry on the inspiration front (my last collaboration was in November 2004) I’ll settle for covers. I’m learning a bunch of Ben Folds stuff at the moment. If I can get hold of a drummer and a bassist, I/we could work out a set list and do a short covers gig.
