I really want to publish my book. I don’t really care if I’m not the youngest writer, I just want people to like my book. It’s important to me that I am succesfull in making people happy.

Thirty years in the making 2 years ago

I’ve been working on a book about highway travel in the United States for the past thirty years. Had a few nibbles from publishers a few years back, but nothing panned out. My manuscript is nearing completion. I hope to have something in print within two years.

Sure I’ve published little things, but I’m talking about BIG things baby!

Cannot really believe I did it! 2 years ago

Getting the first book published was such a huge effort for me, it’s lots of work and it’s hard work too. The satisfaction after it comes so unexpectedly in the end!

publisher vs. self-publishing 4 years ago

I was talking to a friend about my goal of getting The Occupational Adventure Guide published, and she encouraged me not to discount self-publishing as an option. I ran across an interesting article in USA Today about the new options available for that.

Part of it boils down to my goal for publishing a book. While it would be fabulous to rake in piles of cash for it, I see it more as a way to create a bigger footprint and more substance to my reputation by generating more national media exposure and ratcheting up awareness of me, my business, and my ideas.

I know for an author like me (new and unproven) the marketing would be pretty much my responsibility whether I get a publisher or go the self-publishing route, so that’s not much of a factor in the decision. Ultimately, I’m just not sure that a self-published book is going to have the credibility to be able to get people’s attention (e.g., people in the media).

The immediate question that comes up is, “Do you know that?” Of course, the answer is no. Looks like more research is needed.
