this will have to happen after Fall In Love, or Teach Myself Guitar, as I need a guitarist who can break my heart with their playing, to accompany me. Or I’ll try doing it myself.

52 Tracks in 52 Weeks 13 months ago

I set a New Year’s goal in 2008 to write 52 Tracks in 52 Weeks. As of October 8, I’ve posted 39 to my music blog. I’ve got 13 more to go and there are 12 weeks left in the year.

Surprisingly, a staggering majority of the tracks are improvised ambient compositions at about 40 beats per minute. Creating these slow, lethargic, sleepy time pieces tunes my ear to mix issues that I wouldn’t notice if the tempo was higher. Plus, it gets me in the practice of trusting my musical skill enough to play music while the record button is on, with no idea where I’m going with this.

It also gives me the realization that not every track I write has to be great for me to let the world have it. Of the 36 ambient tracks I’ve written so far this year, I doubt very many of them are amazing. The point is that musical output often looks like a bell curve, with a small number of As, a bigger number of Bs, a great number of Cs, a few Ds, and a smattering of Fs. Even if your favorite artist can do no wrong, we never hear the army of turds they wrote to get to their greatest hits. Even some of the songs on Stevie Wonder’s albums are filler (Cs).

Onward!

Making some progress! 15 months ago

So, I wrote an entry quite awhile ago about this, and I am making some progress. I have realized and sort of discovered a very awesome writing technique. Since I am and always have been a vocalist by my very nature, I have found that writing instrumental parts using my voice has become very fun and really practical. I would record musical ideas with my voice, then later go back and simulate with instrument. And sometimes, adding effects, turning the actual study into an instrumental part in and of itself. I am going to write an entire album this way. I feel a ton of inspiration and I feel the creative juice. Let me know if you have ever had this idea about using your voice as a writing guide for making instrumental parts. Could be helpful.

Anyone have advice??? 17 months ago

I am having a problem with getting myself disciplined enough to write and record a few songs. Well, I do have a few songs I have written that I think are really cool, but then I have to find a sound that fits with them, samples that should spice things up, a beat… basically, every time I attempt laying down an instrumental track in hopes of laying the lyrics on top of it all, I find something in the track that sort of turns into something else that sounds cool, and the track that was supposed to be this song turns into some other thing all together and I never get my songs recorded that I wanted to record. Anyone have advice for this? Also, I am having a hard time making decisions. It seems as if I like too many sounds and rhythms and ideas that I try and fit every variation into the song. It really gets out of hand.

Blogging the Experience 20 months ago

I decided at the beginning of 2008 that this was my do-or-die year. This means that on January 2, 2009, if I don’t have an album ready, my gear goes on sale.

Since that decision, I’ve embarked on a project called “52 Tracks in 52 Weeks”. So far, I’m way ahead of schedule. I’ve written 19 tracks so far this year, which is nearly 2 per week. Most of them are ambient, but I’ve found the experience of blogging what I like about them and what I don’t like about them valuable.
