I lived in London for 2 years – mostly I was working in customer service for a large call centre. One of the stats that our bonuses depended on was our average call time. Well when people heard my Australian acccent they would waste my time by asking “Are you Australian? Do you live near Summer Bay? Why are you in England when the weather in Australia is so much better?” etc. etc. etc. OMG
So it was easier to put on a British accent and keep my call times short :-)
