DanT1999 is happily asserting imperfection
Well, I guess I can call this goal complete. It was easier sewing my button back on than I thought it would be. Now I feel a little better equipped with life skills, a little more adult and a little less helpless. My stitch work still hasn’t stood the test of time, however, so I reserve the right to add this goal back again if the button comes off after using it a couple of times…

I just lost the top button off the otherwise decent new pair of shorts I bought at the Gap last month. I guess it doesn’t matter as long as I wear a shirt untucked over it and no one will notice, but it’s still kind of tacky. I wish I could put it back on, but every time I’ve tried to sew it takes me 15 minutes just to get the thread through the eye of the needle in the first place and then either I break the thread during the process of sewing or I don’t tie the end knot quite right and button easily comes off again…

My wife showed me how to do it last night. She made a couple of sock puppets with some buttons.
Now I just need to get around to putting a button back on my pants (if I can find one that matches). Maybe tonight…

at the end of the thread when you are starting the needle. After you have threaded the eye ( that little hole on the non-pointy end) bring the two ends together wet about 4 inches with you mouth (ok get you mind out of the gutter) wrap it around your index ( aka the finger your Mom scolded you with”What did I tell you!”) Then push it off with your thumb with a rolling motion. When you get to the end of your finger hold the tangle of string and pull back on it and you have an (ugly) but effective knot!
Martha Stewart
showed how to sew a button one day on her show. She is MY go to gal. My mom was a domestic disaster!

I looked this up on the web today and found these instructions:

I’m not sure how to tie the knot at the end, but I guess any knot would do. I’ll have to give this a try on my pants soon. I’m sure I have the needle and thread around somewhere.

I have a pair of pants I really like that I haven’t worn to work in a few months because the button broke off. I’m sure my mother in law could do it for me (and get it back to me in a year) but I would much rather do it myself.
I used to know how to do it too. I’m just not sure how to make that knot at the end of all the sewing.
