Obviously Its Meaningless 4 months ago

Although the belt is meaningless, the training is not. I want to know the basics by attaining a blackbelt in either Hapkido or Karate.

ive been studing for a couple of years and i have made great improvement but now i have a job and have to work almost everynight and i havent been able to go as much as i used to and i really want to go all the time and get my black belt but im falling behind

On my way... 11 months ago

I’m nearly there – my particular martial art is Wing Tsun Kung-fu, and I’m a level 8. Level 9 is equivalent to a black belt (though it’s signified by a black shirt in WT).

However between some sickness and a new job I’ve not been able to go to kung fu as much as I would like… or do many things health wise really.

This sucks. I’ve already fallen behind (my wife, who started at the same time as me, got her black belt a month ago… I’m happy for her, but it does make me a little… despondent) and I’m not catching up right now.

I just need to go, get over the damn butterflies, and just do it.

I’m so close! sigh

Last night I got my orange belt! Yay! I broke a board!!

Too bad today I am so sore I couldn’t even straighten my hair. Worth it? Hell yes!!

I’m done with my Tae Kwon Do class that I was enrolled in through Tech (for credit hours) so I’ve signed up, through the same teacher, for adult lessons. I’ve got my outfit (I look ridiculous!) and I’ve got my great attitude (!) and I’m ready to start!
Also, a lot of others from my class signed up for adult classes as well, so this should be a blast!

Black Belt here I come!!!
... in three to four years. :)

Update 2 years ago

Its been a while since the last entry, however, quite a bit has changed on the Karate front. We all started at a club and the whole family got to the first grading (white to red) when our sensei was ousted from the club – for no good reason! We were not impressed!

Only three of us were asked to grade (my partner, my daughter and me). My son was told he didn’t have the patients to grade – well he is only 5, and is very energetic at times.lol However, in having a chat with the ousted sensei he confirmed that my son was ready for the grading and emphasised that he should have been up for the grading (instead of some of the others who actually passed!!) – The reason being that the gradings were being taken by the sensei of that club – bias or what?!

Anyways, my partner and I pulled out of the grading and instead watched my daughter get her first ever karate belt. I was so proud of her. She did so well, she never got anything wrong, and was also very good at her ipon fighting, too.

So, from that brief story, we have decided to follow our sensei when he opens up his own club. The style we’ll be working on (Kyukoshinkai) is slightly different but more old school than the current one we were learning, which is exactly what I wanted in the first place! So, not much progress on this, but we’ve managed to get quite a few contacts in the world of Karate, and made some wonderful friends.

Oh, almost forgot – I’ve also found out that the Kyukoshinkai will honour my purple belt!! So, as long as I can get up to speed in what I’ve forgotten then I’m pretty much half way there! yey!! lol

I miss kickboxing :( There’s nowhere by my uni that does it, even if I could afford it! And with my ability currently at green belt level this goal seems a distant one.

Intro 2 years ago

Many many moons ago I started karate – Shotokan, and managed to get quite far (purple and white) which is quite a few from white (also quite a few from black but we won’t go there.lol).

Anyways, recently I came across a different style of karate which incorporates shotokan quite a lot. I’ve started Kenushukai and dragged my partner along and my two kids, whom all thoroughly enjoy it.

It’s quite strange starting from the bottom rung of the ladder again but it’s good to reaffirm the basics and gives me a good idea of the terminology that’s dropped from my memory over the years.

It’ll take a long time to get back to where I was (let alone to black belt) but it’ll definitely be worth it.
