The Rubin Museum in NYC 150 17th Street 10 months ago

I spent the day fulfilling one of my dreams and it exceeded my expectations. When I arrived it was a sunny afternoon about 12:30. The Rubin Museum is new…wow 6 floors of beautiful artifacts from China, the Himalayas etc. I was lucky to arrive to get an hours tour. This was wonderful because the tour guide was young enthusiastic, and knew a lot about buddhism and explained a lot about the religion, the dalai lamas and such, and inspired me as she spoke of non-attachment and reaching nirvana. It reminded me to stop running after things and really figure out what i am here for and get focused. The day was truly a spiritual experience. I felt like I was at a monastary, or a sacred place. They had lots of books and DVD’s on buddhism which I loved.

Museums have changed, there is a lot of video stuff going on too. For instance when I walked in (the lobby is stunning) there was a wall showing a video of the regions where the art came from. And then later a video of artisans crafting their projects. How great is it to see a piece of art and then see the artist in their native land working on it.

But the most important thing was that the paintings, statues, and the physical building are so beautiful it took my breath away. The museum reminds you of the Guggenheim (can’t spell that) in that there is a spiral staircase going up six floors, that is a piece of art itself. The wood flooring and tracklighting, make everything soooo soothing. And the mandala’s and sand paintings. Beautiful large cafe! While I was perusing their was beautiful live music coming from something that was like a chinese xylophone (can’t spell that either). I had the time of my life. I went alone and got a few christmas presents and a DVD of the making of the musuem from beginning to end. It is by far the most beautiful place I have ever been. It was way too much to do in one day. I actually saw three floors, so I’m looking forward to going back. I love NY and I love the Rubin Museum!
