“Life is a one-way street. No matter how many detours you take, none of them leads back. And once you know and accept that, life becomes much simpler. Because then you know you must do the best you can with what you have and what you are and what you have become.” 8 months ago

AshaVeraRegular exercise helps the brain

“The brains of endurance-trained middle-aged people show evidence of greater plasticity and metabolic efficiency than the brains of healthy but sedentary middle-aged people, a difference that should lead to better brain function later in life, according to a study to be published in the journal Brain Topography.

“[R]esults indicate that regular physical exercise is associated with a healthier brain—better neuronal viability, greater neural plasticity and higher metabolic efficiency. In other words, the brains of habitual exercisers appear to have a higher brain reserve and can be expected to age better, preserving cognitive function for longer periods of time and through a greater number of insults.” via Runners World8 months ago

AshaVeraintelligence ~ more than just IQ

“[O]ur evaluation of intelligence is still biased toward mathematical disciplines. [S]uccess in fields other than math and theoretical physics depends much more on factors other than innate talent, flashes of inspiration and abstraction and number crunching. For instance it often depends on extensive data-gathering which can only come from practice and experience.”

This applies particularly to the “humanities like history or literature where constant practice and a studied appreciation of the human condition is essential to understanding and success; Richard Rhodes and James Michener for instance produced their best work only in their 40s.”

Other fields require “interdisciplinary approaches, teamwork and extensive data analysis [...] leading an older person with a wealth of facts and experience at his or her disposal to have a better chance of making connections and crossing interdisciplinary boundaries.” In addition, the “sheer scope of science has enormously expanded, making it impossible even for a genius to digest the wealth of scientific facts available.” via Scientific American

AshaVeraThis is exactly how I feel right now

Why the diver must rise to the surface of the water slowly:

“A diver must rise to the surface of the water slowly because of the changing pressures and if they simply rose straight to the top from deep down their brain and body wouldn’t be able to cope with trying to equalise the pressure and they would either die or end up with severe problems. It is a way of trying to get your body to equalise the pressure and realise the pressure is lessening. When you go under water, you are putting the amount of pressure of water and the pressure from the land on top of you, that is a lot of pressure to get your body used to.”

Realized today that I feel like I have some decompression sickness. Read the description above and it basically describes the process I’m going through after having lived under extreme pressure for quite a while, and now being in the process of having it change. To avoid permanent problems, I’m going to have to take this slowly. 9 months ago

AshaVeraProcrastination

“Procrastination stems from the fear that ‘I don’t know how to do this perfectly.’

It can be helpful to know that the part of us that stores these negative feelings—what I call Learned Distress—is 2 years old. You wouldn’t yell at a toddler for being scared, and it can be helpful to have this same compassion for yourself when you are feeling reluctant to start or finish something challenging.

[Find ] comfort with your own unique way of doing things (instead of following “their” rules perfectly), and a sense that you have everything you need within you to achieve your goals.”

AshaVeraAnaïs Nin

“It is true that I create over and over again the same difficulties for myself in order to struggle over and over again to master them [but] to continually struggle against the same problem and to continually fail to dominate it brings a feeling of frustration and a kind of paralysis. What is necessary to life, to livingness, is to move on, in other words to move from one kind of problem to another.” 9 months ago

Have heard for years about water becoming a contentious resource issue and it is certainly on the horizon. Just read this article about ways governments are looking to handle this problem. It is definitely something that will need to be managed together. 9 months ago

AshaVeraInteresting

Saw this article in Time discussing a study finding that men who are under psychological stress “not only perceive a heavier female body size as maximally attractive, but also more positively perceive heavier female body sizes.” “This shift suggests that stress alters what you find attractive in a potential partner.” So stress impacts on perceptions. 9 months ago
