It’s been about 6 months and they’re still alive and kicking – Our household waste has reduced heaps, and mum loves the castings for her graden. Mission complete success.

Turned them over last night! 15 months ago

It’s actually looking really healthy! Most of the food is gone, there’s a few bigger chunks that are still a bit mouldy, so I’ve just kind of airated it and moved them to the bottom. There seemed to be a few vinegar flies the other day so I made sure I put plenty of washed and crushed eggshells on top – we’ll see how that goes.

eek - a little over excited perhaps? 16 months ago

I’ve overfed them and now it’s all mouldy and smelly …. I will leave them alone for a while and let them eat themselves back into a nice environment.

Jaxons are growing!! 16 months ago

Jaxons are loving their new home and getting nice and big :) I can’t start feeding them food until the 18th August so I’m just keeping them cool and moist for the time being. I’m keeping a container of food scrpas in the fridge but the food is starting to mould .. and I’m not sure if I can feed them mouldy stuff because they only eat dead matter .. ? I might pop into the Watershed in Newtown to ask the question … Or google it LOL.

City of Sydney Council Workshop 16 months ago

I attended a workshop on composting and worm farming on the weekend – held by our local council. The workshop was fanTAStic. Despite being hung over and a little bit messy:- I managed to remain fascinated the whole two and a half hours and took away a lot of useful information. I in fact also took home a free worm farm courtesy of the council! The presenters were a great, friendly knowledge source and I was very impressed.
I’ll be popping by the harware on the way home tonight to pick up my first thousand worms and a ground up coconut brick thing to give my worms a home! The first thousand worms (or 250G) will be named Jaxon :)

but I really want to do this. If I stay at my job, I want to try this with the kids.

Well I have started my worm farm – pretty easy really. I feel sort of nervous as I don’t want to kill my worms – they seem to be thriving though. The weather here has been quite cold (the damp newspaper on top froze) so I have brought them inside – my partner is tolerating this for the moment (she thinks I am a little crazy).
