Depending on whether this apartment I want is rented to me, I will start my gardening with containers.. that’s at least a good start. I’d love to be surrounded in flowers and perhaps some herbs and a couple of easy container veggies.. :)

I have an amaryllis.. it’s dying. I don’t know how to care for plants much and I’m very scatter brained sometimes and I don’t have my own place, but the moment I get my own place, I’ll be heading to my grandma’s for advice. She has such a beautiful garden all along the fence in her back yard. So, I’ll have one that is just as beautiful, only with more amaryllis.

This stays on my 43things list because it’s very important to me, but I’m grouping it in with the more broad goals that I want for my life. There are other goals that I’m creating to help me get to this point.
But I will send myself e-mail reminders about this to just give me a little prodding to achieve other goals that will get me to having a garden.

also on hold
this goal is also on hold since im at a time in my life where i move frequently and do not own the property that i live on.
hopefully in a few years when im more settled this will be a more attainable goal.
i realize people have in-door gardens – but thats not really something I want to pursue.

...makes it hard to do anything you want to do. Seriously. We have a box backyard, meaning that all we can put in it is a shoebox. Then the backyard is useless. AGH! My grandparents have a garden, and one year I helped my grandpa plant it. It was beautiful. But I want my OWN garden. This is why my goal is not, ‘Have a garden’, but rather, ‘Have my own garden’. I have already had a garden. I want my own.
There are a few things we’ve tried in our box backyard, like tomatoes (worms got ‘em), strawberries (took over EVERYTHING), parsley (grew HUGE so we had to rip it out), and basil (died within 20 seconds of being put in the dirt). Flowers always die. Plus, the dirt we have is about 98% clay, so… it’s not exactly nutrient-rich. It’s better for making pots and mugs. Which I have done.
I want my own garden, but deciding on something to plant poses many problems. We have a lot of trouble with sunlight (there’s not enough of it), dirt (the aforementioned clay), space (there’s not enough of it), and time (I don’t use it well). Poor time management means poor plants. I never water or weed or feed the darn things.
After this entry, maybe I shouldn’t have a garden. I mean, do I just want a bunch of dead plants? No, but seriously: I’ll have to commit to this. I’ll see what kind of plants can handle lots of shade, poor soil quality, and not much care.
I’m thinking…. Cactus?

I just arrived to Portland, Oregon which was one of my “things” that I recently accomplished and happily checked off my list.
Now, on to many other goals that I plan to achieve. Some are already on my list, but this is a new one that has always been on my mind, but needs to be more solidified, even now.
I don’t have any space to start a garden and am definitely not in a stable enough living situation to commit to one, but who knows what will happy by Spring!
So, with that, I place this new goal on my list and will take baby-steps and take time to collect articles and decide on an ideal first garden!
Woohoo!

We planted peppers and tomatoes in pots on our front porch with a group of kids earlier this summer. My roommates and I have really enjoyed using the “fruits of our labor” in our guac – mmmmmmm! It just reinforces my desire to someday have a “real” garden of my own!

Does an Aero Garden count?

It’s not for lack of plants, they number in the hundreds. No, all I want is to not have to have the poor things sitting there in pots and for them to actually make it into the ground.
Just to own my own little plot. Then I can buy even MORE! : )
Until then, I’ll just be the Container Queen.

cranberrygoddess has just noticed 43 things has dumb status updates like facebook
but they only had punnets for transplanting into a garden, which I don’t have here.
It seems so paltry ccmpared to my parents’ vast vegetable garden that I thought was the norm growing up.
